Description

The Crescent Nebula is an emission nebula situated in the Cygnus constellation, at around 5000 ly from Earth (Wikipedia). It is shaped by the strong winds from the central Wolf-Rayet star 136. It has an outer oxygen shell visibile as a blue halo around the nebula. The star loses a mass equivalent to our Sun every 10,000 years.

The palette was the result of multiple trials and errors. I am convinced by now that the 3nm Ha filter is too narrow for some nebulae (especially planetary) since it misses the N signal captured by a 5 or 7nm filter. I made the first test with the NoiseXterminator Pixinsight plugin, a pretty satisfactory one. Of course, visual check is very important for avoidance of detail destruction. But it leaves very few artifacts and is probably its strong point. I also used deconvolution on both narrowband data sets in order to increase the details and it was useful even on the Ha (probably due to my backyard seeing).

Imaged on 9 nights between May 30 and June 20th 2022.
